Drum Metal Separators

In this system, the digital metal separator uses a drum that guides the freely falling or slowly settling granulate into an externally located collection receptacle. When plastic granulate enters the injection molding machine, the machine is either empty and in the process of being filled, or it is full and the material is slowly settling down. With an installation height of 320 mm , the drum metal separator is ideal for those situations where space is not restricted.

Typically, low quality granulate has a higher amount of metal particles than higher grades. The metal separator detects the metal and then blocks the machine's material intake by switching the drum to the "Out of tolerance" position. As the injection molding machine continues to process the granulate, it produces a void underneath the separator. Once the separation is complete, the drum reopens and the material drops down freely for a brief period of time. Metal in this second load of granulate can only be eliminated safely by using a separating drum.

We offer two possible metal removal systems that use our patented drum technology:
1) a digital metal separation using a separation drum which guides the free falling raw material into an externally located receptacle or drum, and 2) an Mpulse digital metal separation system that achieves superior sensitivity levels by utilizing a new powerful digital interference suppression capability that prevents environmental conditions from disturbing the metal detection process.

Metal Separators For Injection MoldingOur standard digital drum metal separator is the best choice for protecting high quality injection molding machines. The Mesep® digital detects and separates metals from granulate free falling material. When raw granulate is drawn through a pipe line to the injection molding machine, there are several points along the way where the granulate can be contaminated by metal. If they aren't removed from the granulate, these metal parts can cause the molding machine to break down leading to expensive losses in production and poor granulate quality. Special Flap Design
When the metal separator has to sit right on the top of an injection molding machine, there are two conditions that must be compensated for: 1) when the machine is empty and the material free falls into the inlet of the machine and 2) after the machine is filled the material flows slowly and discontinuously. If either of these conditions are true, then the sensitivity level of the separator has to be high for a reliable separation of metal. To compensate for either condition, our metal separator uses a new separation flap whose surface and design are unique.

Advantages
The MESEP® digital metal separator is easy to use, requires very little maintenance and can be serviced in a few minutes. Sensitivity is easily adjusted by pressing two buttons +/- to find the right solution for your particular application. Metal detection is activated by the simple pressing of a test button and the only thing you need to supply is a source of air and power.

How The Digital Separator Works
Plastic raw material enters the metal separator in a vertical free fall of a maximum height of 600 mm. Once inside the housing of the separator the raw material passes an electronic metal detector. When metal is detected, an electrical impulse is sent to the computerized processor which controls a magnetic valve and a pnematic cylinder. The pneumatic cylinder is connected in the flap which changes its position after metal is detected. When the flap changes its position to a "metal detected position", the metal free raw material flows out of the side outlet flange which is connected to a box that collects the metal contaminated material. After a short separation time, the flap turns back into its original position. If your raw material is expensive, we recommend that you install a small diameter separator to make sure that the loss of metal free material is minimized.

To reach higher levels of sensitivity and reliability than standard metal detection solutions, the M-Pulse units use a very powerful digital PC board. The M-Pulse unit is normally recommended for use in the food industry where the demand for great sensitivity is much higher. In the plastic industry, the demand can even be higher. For these reasons, more and more processors expect more than a standard metal detection solution. Since even the smallest metal particles can damage a food or plastic processing machine, most processors are looking to the new M-Pulse generation as a possible solution. With the highest levels of sensitivity on the market, and capable of being updated to keep up with the latest in software development, the M-Pulse units of fast becoming the metal detectors of choice.

The Problem of Faulty Metal Detection
With increased sensitivity comes a tendency in metal separators to record metal where there is none. As the sensitivity of metal separators increases, the risk of faulty detections also rise. Depending on the software and the quality of components used, most metal separation devices can be adjusted to reduce their level of sensitivity. Our units are categorically better in so far as they use better software and componenets. All our detectors are completely filled with epoxy harz, so that the vibrations of the housing is extremely low. Our software makes it possible to optimize important application parameters without any adjustments to the PC board. With its new algorithm, the product effect feature doesn't make any more compensation than is necessary. Compared to other metal separators, our units can reach a much higher level of sensitivity without any increase in faulty detections.
